Hebrew Word of the Week —
Magen (מָגֵן) —
The God Who Is Our Shield

In times of uncertainty, people naturally look for protection. When danger feels close, the heart searches for something strong enough to stand between us and what threatens us.

The Hebrew Bible uses a powerful word to describe this kind of protection: Magen (מָגֵן).

Magen means shield — a defensive covering that guards, protects, and stands between a person and harm. In ancient warfare, a shield was not a small accessory. It was essential for survival. A soldier depended on it to absorb the blows that would otherwise strike him directly.

King David uses this word to describe God’s protection during one of the most difficult moments of his life:

“But You, Lord, are a shield (magen) around me, my glory and the One who lifts my head.”

Psalm 3:3

David wrote these words while facing great personal danger. Enemies surrounded him, and his situation was uncertain. Yet he declared that his ultimate security was not found in armies or weapons, but in the Lord Himself. God was his Magen — the One who stood between him and destruction.

When we come to the New Testament, we see this same confidence reflected in the ministry of Yeshua. His disciples lived in a world filled with danger, opposition, and uncertainty. Yet Yeshua repeatedly reminded them that their security was not rooted in earthly stability, but in God’s presence and care.

Even when storms surrounded them — both literal and spiritual — He remained their protector and source of peace.

For believers today, the word Magen carries deep reassurance.

Protection does not always mean the absence of difficulty. Scripture never promises a life without conflict or hardship. But it does promise that God surrounds His people and stands between them and ultimate harm.

A shield absorbs the impact of what is coming.

In the same way, God’s protection guards those who trust in Him. He strengthens their hearts, sustains them in uncertainty, and preserves them through seasons that feel overwhelming.

During times of war, this truth becomes especially meaningful. Many here in Israel — and many who love Israel around the world — are living with tension, concern, and unanswered questions. In such moments, the word Magen reminds us where our confidence truly rests.

Our ultimate security is not found in circumstances.
It is found in God.

Through Yeshua, we know that God’s protection is not temporary. Even when we face hardship in this world, the final victory has already been secured through Him.

This week, if fear or uncertainty begins to weigh on your heart, remember this word:

Magen — The God Who Is Our Shield.

He surrounds His people.
He guards their lives.
He strengthens their hearts.
And His protection never fails.

Prayer

Lord Yeshua,

You are my shield and my protector.
When fear rises and uncertainty surrounds me, help me remember that You are watching over my life.

Strengthen my heart with Your presence.
Guard my mind with Your peace.
Teach me to trust in Your protection and walk forward with courage.

Amen.

With love and blessings,

Pastor Israel Pochtar

Strengthening the Hands That Serve:
Encouraging Our Pastoral Family in Eilat

Pastors spend much of their lives encouraging others. They pray with families, guide people through difficult seasons, teach the Scriptures, and help believers grow in their faith. Yet those who faithfully shepherd others also need moments to step away from their daily responsibilities, share their hearts, and receive encouragement themselves. Recently, Pastor Israel traveled to […]

Until All Israel Hears —
The Good News Project

Nearly two thousand years ago, the Good News of Yeshua began spreading from Jerusalem to the nations. This November, believers from those nations will come to Israel to stand alongside our Beit Hallel team, sharing that same message in the streets of the very land where it all began. There is something deeply meaningful about […]

200 Israelis Encounter the Gospel at Magdala

There are places in Israel where the stories of the Bible suddenly feel very close. Magdala, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, is one of them. Recently, we brought 200 Israelis to this ancient town, where Yeshua (Jesus) ministered in the surrounding region nearly 2,000 years ago. We wanted them to discover more […]

The Stones Are Ancient:
The Gospel Still Changes Lives

Some places carry a history that time cannot erase. Hebrew Word of the Week:

Into Your Hand

Some things are simply beyond our control. We can pray, make wise decisions, do everything we know to do, and still reach a point where the outcome is no longer in our hands. This can be one of the hardest places for us, because we naturally want to know what is going to happen and […]
