Hebrew Word of the Week —
Adonai Nissi (יְהוָה נִסִּי):
The Lord Is My Banner

Hebrew Word of the Week — Adonai Nissi (יְהוָה נִסִּי): The Lord Is My Banner

Every morning, we step into a day we cannot fully predict. Some days begin with excitement and expectation. Others begin with questions we cannot answer, responsibilities that feel heavy, or situations that seem bigger than we are. We do our best to prepare, but we cannot see what lies ahead.

That is why one of the beautiful names God reveals about Himself is Adonai Nissi (יְהוָה נִסִּי, pronounced: ah-doh-NIGH nee-SEE), meaning “The Lord Is My Banner.” It is a name that reminds us we never walk into an unknown day alone. The Lord Himself goes before His people.

The first time we find this name is in Exodus 17. Israel had only recently left Egypt when they were suddenly attacked by the Amalekites. It was their first battle as a nation. Joshua led the people into battle while Moses stood on a nearby hill with the staff of God in his hands. As long as Moses kept his hands raised, Israel prevailed. When his hands became weary, Aaron and Hur came alongside him and helped support his arms until the battle was won.

When everything was over, Moses built an altar and gave it a remarkable name.

“Moses built an altar and called it Adonai Nissi.”

Exodus 17:15

Why that name?

The Hebrew word “nes” means a banner or a standard lifted high above an army. It was the place where soldiers gathered and the reminder of who was leading them. Moses understood that Israel had not won because they were stronger or more experienced than their enemies. They had won because the Lord had gone before them. Their confidence had never been in themselves.

Their confidence had always been in God.

That same truth encourages us today.

Most of us are not facing armies or standing on a battlefield, but we all face moments that test our faith. We worry about our families. We pray over difficult decisions. We carry burdens that no one else can see. Sometimes we wonder if we have enough strength for what lies ahead.

Adonai Nissi gently reminds us that we were never meant to rely on our own strength. Before we face today’s challenges, God is already there. Before we know what tomorrow holds, He already knows the way. Before we speak a single prayer, our Father is already at work.

Yeshua gives us the greatest reason to live with that confidence.

Through His death and resurrection, He won the greatest victory we could ever need. Sin no longer has the final word. Death has been defeated. Because we belong to Him, we do not face life wondering whether God is with us. We know that He is. The One who overcame the world now walks with us every step of the way.

Perhaps that is why Adonai Nissi is such a wonderful phrase to carry with you this week. Before you open your emails, begin your work, attend that appointment, or face that difficult conversation, simply whisper these words:

“Adonai Nissi.”
“The Lord is my Banner.”
“He goes before me.”
“I do not walk alone.”

Those words are not a good luck charm, nor are they a promise that every day will be easy. They are a declaration of faith. They remind us that our confidence is not found in ourselves but in the God who is always faithful. Just as He led Israel through the wilderness, He continues to lead His people today.

So wherever this week takes you, remember Adonai Nissi.

Lift your eyes to the Lord before you look at the challenges before you. Trust Him with what you cannot control, and walk forward with the quiet confidence that comes from knowing your life is in His hands.

A Prayer

Father, thank You for revealing Yourself as Adonai Nissi—the Lord my Banner. Thank You that I never face today alone. You know what lies ahead, and You have promised never to leave me nor forsake me.

Help me to trust You instead of my own strength. When I feel anxious, remind me that You go before me. When I feel weak, remind me that Your strength is enough. Thank You for the victory You have given me through Yeshua and for the confidence I can have because I belong to You.

Today I choose to follow You, trust You, and rest under Your banner.

In Yeshua’s name, amen.

Blessings,
Pastor Israel Pochtar

The Unexpected Encounter That Gave Marina Hope

The Work He Left In Our Hands —
Galilee Evangelism Campaign

Here in Israel, many people can know the names of biblical places and the stories connected with them — and still know very little about who Yeshua really is. For many of the new Jewish immigrants we meet, Israel itself is also new. They are building a life in a new country, discovering the land, […]

“Please Don’t Wait Too Long” —
Holocaust Survivors Project Report

Some of the Holocaust survivors who walked into our gathering in Ashdod already knew us. Others did not. We could see the hesitation on a few faces, and we understood it. They had been invited into a room with people they barely knew — and we were wondering how they would respond when we spoke […]

Inside the Sukkah:
Remembering the God Who Provides

One of the things I love about Sukkot is how many simple reminders of God’s faithfulness surround us during this Feast. Hebrew Word of the Week:
Adonai Uzzi (יְהוָה עֻזִּי) —
The LORD Is My Strength

We all become tired sometimes, and I don’t mean only physically. There is another kind of tiredness that comes when you have been carrying something for a long time. You have prayed, you have tried to make the right decisions, you have kept going, but the situation has still not changed. After some time, you […]

Holocaust Survivors Praise Report

The Moroccan food was a hit. We had brought it from Ashdod for a gathering with Holocaust survivors in Jerusalem, and before long people around the tables were asking about our city. What is Ashdod like? Could they come visit sometime? We loved that. Somewhere between passing plates, talking across the table and getting to […]
