We’ve just stepped into a very special time on God’s calendar—the new month of Elul. In Israel, every month begins when people spot the new moon. God gave Israel His calendar so we could live with Him in rhythm, not just counting days but dedicating them. Every week we celebrate Shabbat, and every month we celebrate Rosh Chodesh, the new moon—a little reminder to pause, reset, and dedicate our time, our hearts, and our lives to Him.
It’s a beautiful rhythm, connecting creation, the heavens, and our souls.
Elul is not just another month on the calendar. It’s the season leading up to two of the most significant days in the biblical year: Rosh Hashanah, the Feast of Trumpets, and Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.
Rosh Hashanah reminds us of God’s kingship, calling us to reflect on the past year, to think about how we have walked, and to prepare our hearts for what lies ahead. Yom Kippur calls us even deeper—it’s a time of cleansing, repentance, and intimate reflection before the Lord. You can actually feel the atmosphere shift in Israel during this season. People pray more, read the Scriptures, visit synagogues, and open their hearts in ways that are truly inspiring.
The prophet Malachi speaks God’s invitation clearly:
“Return to Me, and I will return to you”
Malachi 3:7
This is the heart of Elul. It’s not about trying harder or being perfect—it’s about turning back to God, letting Him meet us where we are, and opening our hearts to His love and guidance.
During this season, the shofar, or trumpet, is blown in synagogues across Israel.
The trumpet is more than a sound; it’s a call to the soul, a reminder that God is holy and that our lives are meant to reflect His light. For us as believers in Yeshua, it’s also a time to rejoice. Our Messiah has already made the way for forgiveness and cleansing. We don’t need to earn it—we simply receive it and let it transform us.
So, what does this mean for us today? It’s a chance to pause. To take a deep breath. To look at our lives and ask, “Lord, is there anything in my heart that needs Your light? Anything that’s keeping me from walking fully with You?” It might be bitterness, worry, or even things that seem small, but God cares about it all. Just like the new moon marks a fresh beginning in the sky, God offers fresh beginnings for our hearts too.
Elul is a season to pray, to reflect, and to prepare.
It’s a time to reconnect with God daily, to spend a few extra minutes reading His Word, to write down prayers, or simply to sit in silence and let Him speak. It’s also a season to think about others—to ask God how we can show His love in practical ways, whether through encouraging words, acts of kindness, or simply being present for someone who needs us.
The beauty of this season is that it reminds us we are never alone in our journey. God is always reaching out to us, inviting us to return, and giving us opportunities to start anew. Elul is God’s invitation to open our hearts wider, to let Him shape us, and to walk with Him more closely than ever.
As we move through this month, let’s lean in. Let’s let God cleanse and guide our hearts. Let’s listen for His voice in prayer and reflection, and let’s prepare for the joy and hope of the feasts ahead. Because in Yeshua, we are forgiven, we are made clean, and we are loved beyond measure.
Elul is a season of mercy, of hope, and of fresh starts.
