What does it mean to truly choose life?
As Moses approaches the end of his leadership, Israel stands together before the Lord at one of the most important moments in their journey. A new generation is preparing to enter the Promised Land, Joshua is preparing to lead them, and Moses places a choice before the people:
“I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life…” — Deuteronomy 30:19
In Parashat Nitzavim–Vayelech (Deuteronomy 29:9–31:30), Pastor Israel Pochtar explores what this choice means for Israel—and what these words can teach us today.
In this week’s Torah Reading, we discover:
What it means to stand together before God
Why failure does not have to be the end of our story
The biblical meaning of Teshuvah — returning to God
What Moses meant when he told Israel to “choose life”
Why God’s Word is meant to remain close to our hearts
How Joshua could face an uncertain future with courage
Why every generation must intentionally pass God’s truth to the next
One of the most powerful Hebrew words in this portion is Chaim (חַיִּים) — life.
Moses does not present Israel with an abstract theological idea. He calls them to make a choice: love the Lord, listen to His voice, hold fast to Him, and walk in His ways.
This theme finds a beautiful connection in Yeshua, who said that He came that we might have life and have it abundantly.
Nitzavim–Vayelech is also a portion about transition.
Moses is preparing to step aside. Joshua is preparing to lead. Israel is standing on the edge of something new. Yet their confidence does not rest in Moses, Joshua, or their own strength.
It rests in God.
“He will not leave you nor forsake you.” — Deuteronomy 31:6
Whatever season lies ahead, we do not have to enter it alone. God calls us to return to Him, choose His ways, hold firmly to His Word, and move forward knowing that He goes before us.
