In this week’s “Shabbat Shalom” devotional, Pastor Israel shares an encouraging message inspired by two powerful Hebrew words that capture the heart of God’s call to His people: “chazak” (חזק), meaning “be strong,” and “emats” (אֹמֶץ), meaning “be courageous.”
These words echo through the Scriptures and remind us of the boldness and confidence that Yeshua wants His followers to carry.
Throughout His ministry, Yeshua often reassured His followers, calling them not to live in fear but in faith. Whether speaking to His disciples as they braved storms on the Sea of Galilee, facing hostile crowds, or moving through seasons of difficulty, Yeshua’s message was consistently one of courage and trust in God’s power. He taught them that courage wasn’t just about avoiding fear but also about standing strong and relying on the Father’s strength.
“Chazak” and “emats” first resound in Scripture in the words God spoke to Joshua as he prepared to enter the Promised Land: “Be strong and courageous, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua was leading the Israelites into an unknown future, yet God reminded him that his strength would come not from his own power but from God’s unwavering presence. This call to courage was not just to help Joshua personally; it was to make him a leader and a source of strength for others.
As believers, we, too, can be hesitant when facing new challenges or seasons of hardship.
Sometimes, God’s call to step out in strength may feel like an impossible task. But when we take a step of faith, the Holy Spirit meets us with His power and guides us. In our willingness to stand firm and act with courage, we become a source of hope and blessing to our families, our congregations, and our communities around the world.
These two words, “chazak” and “emats”, invite us to tap into God’s strength every day. They are words that serve as a reminder that even when we feel weary, God’s Spirit is ready to equip us for every challenge. So, as we enter this Shabbat, may we carry “chazak” and “emats” in our hearts, allowing them to inspire us to live out God’s purpose boldly and to be a light to others.
Together, let us respond to God’s call to “be strong and courageous.” As we do, we can trust that He will empower us and use our faith to reveal His glory and love to those around us. Shabbat Shalom!
