Shabbat is a truly special time in Israel, bringing a shift in the atmosphere as people bless one another with heartfelt greetings and prayers. Known as Birkat Shabbat—the Shabbat Blessing—this time is filled with joy, reflection, and a deeper awareness of God’s goodness.
One of the beautiful blessings spoken during this sacred time is Birkat Tov, meaning “Blessings of Good.” Psalm 21:3 (NKJV) declares, “For You meet him with the blessings of goodness.” In Hebrew, this phrase is Brachot Tov—blessings of good. The word Tov simply means “good.” The Bible tells us that God is good, and therefore, all that comes from Him is good. As Shabbat begins, it is a perfect moment to pause, remember His goodness, and declare blessings over one another.
Even in the midst of life’s challenges, as emotions and circumstances shift, Shabbat serves as a time to refocus on God’s unwavering faithfulness. It is an opportunity to prepare our hearts, to speak life-giving words, and to release the blessings of goodness into our families, communities, and beyond.
A particularly powerful verse, Psalm 21:5, says, “His glory is great in Your salvation.” In Hebrew, this is expressed as Gadol Kevodo B’Yeshuatecha. The word Yeshuatecha means “Your salvation,” but it also holds a deeper meaning—it directly connects to the name Yeshua, Jesus. In essence, the verse can be understood as “His glory is great in Your Jesus.” Even in the Old Testament, there is a prophetic connection between salvation and the Messiah, Yeshua.
As we embrace this Shabbat, may the Brachot Tov—blessings of goodness—be upon you. May you experience the peace and joy of the Lord, surrounded by loved ones, and filled with the knowledge of His unfailing love.
