Beit Hallel’s Pastors Sasson Pochtar and Kostia Tsivin recently visited this remarkable site to reflect on the story of Deborah, a prophetess, judge, and a powerful leader of Israel. As they stood on this very mountain, they shared deep insights about her faith, courage, and obedience to God’s word.
A Prophetess and a Judge
Deborah was a woman chosen by God to lead Israel during a time of oppression. “She was a prophetess and a judge of Israel. She led them up to Mount Tabor—and that’s exactly where we are sitting today!” Standing in this historical location, the Scriptures in Judges 4 provide a powerful account of her leadership.
The Israelites cried out to the Lord for help because Sisera had cruelly oppressed them for 20 years (Judges 4:3). Despite the great power of their enemies, God raised up Deborah to guide His people. Judges 4:4 states, “Now Deborah, a prophet, the wife of Lappidoth, was leading Israel at that time.” She was not only a prophetess but also a judge—an extraordinary role for a woman in that era.
Faith and Obedience
Deborah received a word from the Lord and called for Barak, the military leader, saying:
The Lord, the God of Israel, commands you: Go, take with you ten thousand men of Naphtali and Zebulun and lead them up to Mount Tabor
Judges 4:6
God’s word was clear, but Barak hesitated. In verse 8, he told Deborah:
If you go with me, I will go; but if you don’t go with me, I won’t go.

This response highlights how often people hesitate to act unless they are sure of God’s guidance. Seeking divine confirmation before taking a step forward is a common theme in faith journeys.
Deborah responded in verse 9: “Certainly, I will go with you,” but she warned that the victory over Sisera would ultimately be given to a woman. And indeed, God delivered Israel, and Sisera was defeated by another courageous woman, Jael.
Lessons for Today
The story of Deborah resonates with the challenges Israel faces today. “Israel was in a difficult time then, just as we are now,” the message reminds us. “But the lesson remains the same—when God is with us, victory is assured.”
The Word of God is timeless. Written thousands of years ago, its principles still apply. When people try to act without God’s blessing, the consequences can be difficult. But when they move forward with His guidance, they see His hand at work.

Mount Tabor holds deep spiritual significance. “It’s amazing to sit here and think—Deborah was here too,” the reflection continues. “This is where history was made, where God’s power was revealed.”
