What happens when fear becomes louder than faith?
In this week’s Torah Reading, Parashat Shelach (Numbers 13:1–15:41), Moses sends twelve spies into the Promised Land. They return carrying evidence of God’s faithfulness and the abundance of the land He promised to Israel. Yet despite seeing the fruit for themselves, ten of the spies focus on the obstacles instead of God’s promises.
Only Joshua and Caleb choose faith over fear.
Their story reminds us that the greatest battles are often fought in our hearts and minds. Fear magnifies problems, while faith magnifies God. The people of Israel stood at the threshold of God’s promise, yet unbelief prevented an entire generation from entering their inheritance.
This portion also concludes with God’s command concerning the tzitzit, reminding His people to remember His commandments and remain faithful to Him.
As followers of Yeshua, we are called to walk by faith and not by fear. Just as Joshua and Caleb trusted God’s word above what they saw, Yeshua calls us to trust our Heavenly Father even when circumstances seem overwhelming.
