Life is a journey, and along the way, we encounter seasons of great joy and seasons of deep struggle. Some paths are smooth, filled with blessings and victories, while others are rugged, marked by trials and uncertainty.
The Israelites understood this reality well.
Their journey through the wilderness was long and arduous, filled with moments of doubt, hardship, and testing. Yet, through it all, God’s presence never left them. Still, despite His provision and guidance, there were times when discouragement took hold of their hearts.
In the book of Numbers, we read:
Then they journeyed from Mount Hor by the Way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; and the soul of the people became very discouraged on the way.
Numbers 21:4
The Hebrew word for “discouraged” in this passage is tiktzar, which literally means “shortened.” It paints a vivid picture of how discouragement affects us—it shrinks our patience, our faith, and our ability to see beyond the struggles of the moment. When hardships seem unending, our perspective narrows, and we begin to feel as though hope is slipping through our fingers.
Have you ever felt like that?
Like the weight of your circumstances is closing in, making it difficult to breathe, to believe, to keep pressing forward? When discouragement sets in, it can seem as if our strength is cut short, our endurance depleted. But just as discouragement diminishes our vision, encouragement expands it—lifting our gaze beyond the difficulties before us and anchoring our hearts in the faithfulness of God.
King David experienced this same internal battle. In the Psalms, he cried out:
Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance.
Psalm 42:5
David understood that the key to overcoming discouragement was not found in his circumstances but in his perspective. Instead of allowing despair to dictate his emotions, he chose to remind his soul to hope in God. He redirected his focus from his struggles to the unshakable faithfulness of the Lord. This is the path to victory over discouragement—shifting our eyes from what we see in the natural and fixing them on Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith.
Even when the road ahead seems long, when exhaustion threatens to overtake us, and when our patience feels like it’s running out, the answer remains the same:
Hope in God. Praise Him. Trust in His goodness.
The wilderness may test us, but it does not define us. Our trials are not the end of our story; they are part of the journey leading us into God’s promises.
If you are feeling weary today, take a moment to pause and remember who God is. Reflect on His faithfulness in your life—the times He has provided, protected, and sustained you. Speak His promises over your situation. Lift your voice in worship, even in the midst of difficulty. There is power in praise, and as we glorify Him, His presence fills our hearts, bringing renewed strength and peace.
I pray that this Shabbat will be a time of deep renewal for you. May the Lord refresh your spirit, strengthen your faith, and remind you that you are never alone. He is walking with you through every wilderness, leading you to a place of hope and joy. Do not lose heart—He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it.
Shabbat Shalom!
