Parashat Vayeshev (Genesis 37:1 – 40:23)
Theme: God’s Presence in the Pit — Faithfulness in Adversity

1. Joseph the Dreamer (Gen. 37:1–11)
Joseph, the favored son, receives prophetic dreams (chalomot, חֲלוֹמוֹת) showing his family bowing before him. His brothers’ jealousy (qin’ah, קִנְאָה) blinds them to God’s plan.
Hebrew Insight: Vayeshev (וַיֵּשֶׁב — “and he settled”) hints at comfort disrupted; just when Jacob settles, turmoil begins.
Messianic Connection: Like Joseph, Yeshua was beloved by the Father yet rejected by His brothers (John 1:11).
Application: God-given dreams often invite opposition. Stay faithful — the pit is often the path to purpose.

2. Betrayed and Sold (Gen. 37:12–36)
Joseph is stripped of his robe (ketonet pasim, כְּתֹנֶת פַּסִּים) and sold for twenty pieces of silver. His brothers deceive their father with blood-stained garments.
Messianic Connection: Yeshua, too, was betrayed for silver and stripped of His garment (Matt. 26:15; 27:28).
Application: Human betrayal cannot cancel divine destiny. What others mean for evil, God can redeem for good.

3. Temptation and Integrity (Gen. 39:1–20)
In Egypt, Joseph prospers under Potiphar but refuses the advances of his wife, saying, “How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?”
Hebrew Key Word: Yir’at Adonai (יִרְאַת יְהוָה — fear/reverence of the LORD).
Messianic Connection: Like Yeshua, Joseph resisted sin though falsely accused.
Application: Godly character is proven in secret places. The fear of the LORD guards our hearts when no one is watching.

4. The LORD Was with Him (Gen. 39:21 – 40:23)
Even in prison, God grants Joseph favor (chen, חֵן — grace) and uses him to interpret dreams for Pharaoh’s servants.
Messianic Connection: Yeshua also descended into the “pit” of death yet became the source of hope to others there.
Application: God’s presence is not limited by circumstances. Wherever you are placed, be a channel of His chen.

Vayeshev teaches that God’s favor remains even in suffering.
