Two years have passed since that black Saturday, yet the air in Nahal Oz still carries a weight no community should ever know. October 7 is no longer just a date — it is a scar on the soul of a nation. The largest massacre since the Holocaust.
A morning when homes became battlefields and innocence was shattered, yet when a generation of lions rose from the ashes. Even in the midst of terror, God was moving, and inside one small home in Nahal Oz, a miracle unfolded. This is Katya’s story — a survivor, a believer, and a woman whose prayers held back death itself.
“We only have a few minutes…”
When the first rockets fell, Katya and her family ran into their bomb shelter — a routine Israelis have come to know far too well. But nothing about that morning would be routine. For the first time in its history, thousands of terrorists breached the fence between Israel and Gaza, with many infiltrating their kibbutz, and some their home.
As the family hid in their bomb shelter, they heard Arabic voices moving through their home — footsteps, drawers ripped open, guns clattering on the floor. They knew exactly what was happening on the other side of the wall. Yet in the middle of it all, something remarkable was unfolding inside Katya’s heart.
“I didn’t feel fear. I thought these could be my last minutes, but inside me there was peace. I remembered who I am — a royal priesthood, a child of God.”
In that moment, identity overcame terror.
Death entered the house… but not the room
Later video footage revealed two terrorists climbing through a window and moving from room to room. From inside the safe room, the family heard them searching just centimeters away — overturning furniture, arguing, and returning repeatedly to the hallway. The safe-room door handle was within reach the entire time.
Yet they never opened it.
Reporters later said, “They never touched the door. For one to two hours they searched every corner, but they never saw the door.” In a scene echoing the first Passover, death passed by, and the Lord Himself stood in the gap.
When Katya felt she had no words left, she simply whispered the Name that darkness cannot stand before.
“Yeshua… Yeshua… Yeshua… Hallelujah.”
And God saved them.
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you… when you walk through fire, you shall not be burned.”
Isaiah 43:2
Hope in a Wounded Land
Out of around 500 residents in Nahal Oz, only 15 were killed — a staggering miracle compared to what unfolded in neighboring communities. Yet today, only six families have returned. Homes remain silent, frozen in trauma, and the sound of everyday life has not yet returned.
Katya, however, looks at her broken home with eyes of faith.
“I already see it renewed. I see the glory of God here. This house will become a prayer room — our tithe to the Lord.”
She is turning the very place where terrorists walked into a sanctuary — a room dedicated entirely to prayer. A house once marked by trauma is becoming a house of meeting.
“The LORD is near to the brokenhearted.”
Psalm 34:18
A Call to Stand With Them
Katya and her family are returning to rebuild their home and revive their community, believing that life can rise where death tried to reign. They hope their courage will inspire other families to return as well. They are not seeking spotlight or recognition; they are simply praying, believing, and trusting that God will send the right people at the right time.
As a congregation and as friends of Israel, we are stepping in to help. This is an opportunity for us to take part in their restoration — to help repair what was shattered and to stand alongside Katya with compassion, strength, and the kind of faith that continues to move mountains in Israel today.
“Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy.”
Psalm 126:5
With God’s help and with the support of His people, we believe the day is coming when we will walk through that rebuilt home and thank the Lord for His miracles, knowing we were part of the story. And as life returns to Nahal Oz, we will witness hope rising again in a place the enemy tried to silence.
Am Yisrael Chai! The Nation of Israel Lives!
