Jonah’s Disobedience vs God’s Mercy

One of the most important lessons we can learn from Jonah’s disobedience is that you can never run from the Lord and that if you did, you don’t stay away; return to Him.

Why didn’t Jonah want to go to Nineveh?

Nineveh was a massive city by biblical terms, with a population of over 600,000 people. It was a city God didn’t want to destroy.

Jonah was afraid because the big and strong gentile city was a potential threat to Israel.

The prophet was also conflicted. In the Old Testament, God was very clear about going to Gentiles and dwelling with them and now Jonah was being sent to do what he always believed the people of Israel shouldn’t do.

Jonah also didn’t feel the same mercy for Nineveh as God did. While God was looking to spare the city from judgment, Jonah was trying to avoid being used as a tool of mercy on a city Jonah did want to see judged and condemned.
