Are You Living in Gratitude? A Lesson from Deuteronomy 26

In this week’s Torah reading, Parashat Ki Tavo (Deuteronomy 26:1–29:8), Israel is preparing to enter the Promised Land. After years in the wilderness, they are about to receive homes, harvests, security, and abundance. But Moses gives them an important instruction: when the blessing comes, remember where it came from.

The people were commanded to bring their firstfruits before the Lord and retell the story of God’s faithfulness—how He saw their suffering, delivered them from Egypt, and brought them into the land He had promised.

In this week’s Torah Reading, Pastor Israel Pochtar explores:

Why God commanded Israel to bring the Bikkurim (בִּכּוּרִים) — the firstfruits
How remembering God’s deliverance produces gratitude
Why God deserves our first and our best
What it means to live as God’s treasured people
The relationship between listening, obedience, and blessing
Why God’s warnings are also an invitation to examine our hearts and return to Him
How these truths point us toward Yeshua

One of the powerful Hebrew words in this portion is Zachar (זָכַר) — remember.

Biblical remembering is more than recalling something from the past. Israel was called to remember God’s faithfulness so that what He had done would shape the way they lived in the present.

The same is true for us.

When we remember how God has provided, delivered, forgiven, and sustained us, gratitude begins to replace entitlement and fear. We recognize again that everything we have ultimately comes from Him.

And the greatest reason we have to give thanks is God’s salvation. Through Yeshua, we have received something we could never earn for ourselves.
