In a few days, we will celebrate the start of the Hebrew month of Iyar. This is a really meaningful time here in Israel, as it is for all of us as believers. Iyar falls right between Passover and Shavuot (also known as Pentecost), and it’s more than just “in-between” time. It’s actually a season filled with purpose, reflection, and preparation.
You might know that in the Bible, God told the people of Israel to count 50 days from Passover to Shavuot. This is called the Counting of the Omer (an ancient unit of volume for grains). But it’s not just counting for the sake of keeping track of time. It’s an invitation to pause each day and take a moment with God—to pray, reflect, and prepare our hearts for what’s coming.
Why is this important? Because Shavuot isn’t just another feast. It’s the time we remember the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, and as believers in Yeshua, we also celebrate it as the day the Holy Spirit was poured out and the Church was born. It’s a powerful, holy moment, and the days leading up to it can be just as meaningful if we take them to heart.
Traditionally, this time of year is when people in Israel would reflect each day and draw closer to God. It’s like a spiritual journey—one day at a time. And it’s something we can all take part in. Whether it’s five minutes in the morning or a longer time of prayer and worship, let’s make space to seek the Lord daily and invite Him to prepare us for more of His presence.
The month of Iyar also has a special meaning in Hebrew. It’s connected to the phrase “I am the Lord who heals you” (Exodus 15:26). So this season is also about healing—spiritually, emotionally, even physically. As we count the days, let’s believe that God is working in us, restoring and renewing what’s been broken or weary.
And don’t forget—Rosh Chodesh, the first day of the Hebrew month, is a great time to stop, give thanks, and dedicate the new month to the Lord. It’s like a fresh start every few weeks!
So here’s our invitation to you: Let’s not just count days—let’s make the days count. Let’s walk closely with the Lord, be filled with His Spirit, and get ready for all the good things He’s preparing for us this Shavuot.
