In this week’s Torah portion, Parashat Ki Tisa, we encounter one of the most dramatic and sobering moments in Israel’s journey with God—the story of the golden calf. While Moses is on Mount Sinai receiving the commandments, the people grow impatient and turn to an idol made from their own gold.
What begins with impatience quickly leads to idolatry and a broken covenant.
Yet this portion is not only about failure. It is also a powerful story of intercession, repentance, and restoration.
When judgment seems inevitable, Moses stands in the gap for the people, appealing to God’s covenant promises. Through repentance and humility, the relationship between God and Israel is renewed.
In one of the most profound moments in the Torah, God reveals His character to Moses:
“The Lord, the Lord, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth.”
— Exodus 34:6
This revelation shows that God’s glory is not revealed through power alone, but through mercy, patience, and faithfulness.
For believers in Yeshua (Jesus), this passage also points forward to the Messiah. Just as Moses interceded for Israel, Yeshua intercedes for us, standing between judgment and mercy.
